Hands Across The Sand - Saturday 6/26/2010
What: Hands Across the Sand is a movement made of people of all walks of life and crosses political affiliations. This movement is not about politics; it is about protection of our coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife, fishing industry and coastal military missions. Let us share our knowledge, energies and passion for protecting all of the above from the devastating effects of oil drilling.
Where: On beach near Joe's Crab Shack, end of Beach Blvd. in Jacksonville Beach.
When: Come to beach on June 26 at 11:00 a.m. Look for BSTP's cabana tent. At noon we will join hands for 15 minutes. Right-click to download poster for sharing.
The first "Hands" event was held in February. We counted at least 63 people who braved the 34 degree wind chill that afternoon in Jax Beach. We joined with thousands of Floridians around the state to convey a strong message that we want clean, renewable energy resources! The explosion in the Gulf is the latest wake-up call that we can no longer ignore. Speak up for the environment and make your voice heard by joining with us. What began as a Florida-only movement has now grown to include national and international locations!
WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW
The next step is to contact state officials to be sure they hear your voice. Please also take a moment to read this important message from Dave Rauschkolb, founder of Hands Across The Sand.
With more drilling-friendly leadership taking over the House and Senate this November, the current legislative session could lay the groundwork for allowing oil rigs to set up off Florida's coast. Urgency is required! They won't wait to take a vote, so please don't wait to let them know where you stand! Some links take you to pre-written letters that you can edit or send as is, just add your name and address. It's important to all marine life and also to our way of life as beach people.
Learn:
~ Senate Bill 2622, introduced by Sen. Haridopolous. Provides for easements over sovereign
submerged lands for the construction, installation, and maintenance of structures relating to the production of oil, gas, or other petroleum products, etc. [More here]
~ Q and A with actual facts!
Do:
~ Send a letter (prewritten but editable) to your state senator and representative. You can even print them out when finished.
~ Contact Gov. Charlie Crist by email, or call his office: (850) 488-7146.
~ Contact Sen. Haridopolous by email, or call his office: (850) 487-5056.
The Sierra Club is also asking folks to contact U.S. Senators George LeMieux and Bill Nelson. Nelson is all for clean energy and is leading the opposition to more drilling in the Senate, so please thank him for that. But George LeMieux needs to hear from you. He has a key swing vote for a strong climate bill with no drilling. Now is the time to make sure he knows his constituents (that’s you & everybody on the beach with you) want him to support a strong climate bill with NO drilling.
